Gluten-free options on Magazine Street

New Orleans is a food lover’s paradise and Magazine Street is home to some of the city’s best restaurants. If you have a gluten allergy, finding the perfect spot may feel intimidating. Don’t worry, Magazine Street is full of allergy-friendly restaurants for those with a gluten intolerance and those who avoid cross contamination (hello dedicated fryer!)

WARNING Food menus and kitchens change constantly. Always, always, always ask the restaurant about allergies. People in New Orleans love to talk about food and most restaurants are very knowledgeable and happy to help!

Casual dining

Gris-Gris: Gluten-free items are marked on the menu. The steak and blue cheese salad is awesome.

Reginelli’s: This beloved pizza spot has a great selection of salads as well as gluten-free pizza options like a cauliflower crust.

Sukho Thai: This Thai restaurant has several gluten free-items including their whole curry section.

Casamentos: Casamentos is a seafood staple in New Orleans and with their dedicated gluten-free fryer, it’s a paradise for anyone who avoids cross contamination. Everything in the kitchen is gluten free, so nothing fried is off-limits. This is the only place I know in the city to get celiac-safe fried seafood. Check the restaurant hours and plan to bring cash, but for gluten free diners Casamentos is a must!

Elizabeth Street Café: Even though there is no gluten free menu, this cafe in the Hotel Saint Vincent has an allergy book behind the counter to help you make an informed decision. My gluten free favorite is the pork belly with rice!

Theo’s: Theo’s has a gluten-free crust option for its pizzas as well.

Tal’s Hummus: The hummus here is fantastic and they have gluten-free pita for wraps and dipping. Ask if their frier is gluten-free on the day (sometimes it is and sometimes it isn’t) to add fries to your meal!

For breakfast or lunch

Slim Goodies: Slim Goodies is a Magazine Street breakfast staple and has a lot of gluten-free items on their menu including gluten free pancakes and waffles. Ask your server if you’re concerned about cross-contamination and they will point you in the right direction.

Stein’s Deli: Stein’s is a great option for breakfast or lunch. They have gluten-free bread and they can make most of their sandwiches gluten-free. Pro Tip – Let them know if you can’t have something with cross-contamination and they’ll make your sandwich in a separate area.

A night out

La Petite Grocery: This excellent New Orleans staple is very accommodating for dietary concerns.

Saba: Get the crudités with your hummus and you’ll make everyone eating pita jealous.

Shaya: Most of the time the fryer is gluten-free, but every once in a while they have a special that will cross-contaminate so always check. When the fryer is safe, the fried chicken hummus is hard to beat.

Saffron: Saffron is really good for Indian food, and they have a gluten-free version of naan.

Avo: Don’t be fooled by the Italian menu. The fish and steak here are great and they always have gluten-free appetizers and sides.

Bisu Toro: They have great sushi and all of their soy sauce is tamari. They also use gluten-free rice vinegar. Most of the sauces are gluten-free, but a few are not so talk to your server. They are very familiar with allergies.

Lilette: This spot is amazing for a nice lunch or dinner. Lots of gluten-free options and they always have fun gluten-free desserts!
