COPSII & MSMA Announce
2nd Annual Magazine Street Blues Festival
The 2nd District Police and COPS II (Citizens Organization for Police Support 2nd District) are pleased to announce the Second Annual Magazine Street Blue’s Festival.
The event will take place on Saturday, October 9, and Sunday, October 10, 2010. Last year’s one-day festival was such a success that we are extending it to 2 days this year. The Festival will be held where Napoleon and Magazine meet (next to the precinct house).
Please extend this notice to all members and encourage them to take part in the Second District Second Line that we hope to begin the festival with on Saturday at noon from Valence Street to Laurence Square. Besides the second line, the event will feature food booths from restaurants and caterers from throughout the District; libations from fully stocked bars and beer sponsors; arts from our local talented artists; a kids’ area; and a silent auction.
But, with all this said – WE NEED YOUR HELP! We are in need of sponsorship money to assist in the setup costs of this event. So, we ask you – do you want to be a part of the positive future of our district and city? No amount of donation is too small to make our goal of $25,000. This represents our fixed costs so that all funds raised will begin the 2nd District endowment.

Who Dats on Magazine Street
Shop Local for a Stronger Economy
The Urban Conservancy, a New Orleans-based non-profit group, and Civic Economics, one of the nation's leading retail analysis firms, released a study that shows locally-owned businesses return more dollars to the local economy than the national chain stores they compete with.
The study, Thinking Outside the Box: a Report on Independent Merchants and the Local Economy, shows that local retailers re-circulate revenue within the local economy at twice the rate of big box retailers, and on a square foot basis, generate four times the economic impact.
The research data is based on a recent survey of Magazine Street merchants.
The study also declares that if consumers shift 10 percent shopping dollars from national retailers to local retailers, its the equivalent of injecting an additional $235 million into the regional economy each year.
Dana Eness, executive director of The Urban Conservancy and Staylocal.org says she hopes this study will serve as a catalyst for business and political leaders to develop a coordinated strategy that focuses on strengthening locally owned and operated businesses.
The report is available online as a PDF download.
